Air New Zealand has recently unveiled its first new uniform in 14 years, marking a significant shift in style and cultural representation. Designed by renowned New Zealand-born fashion designer Emilia Wickstead, the new attire is a vibrant celebration of the nation's heritage and identity.

Emilia Wickstead, known for her elegant designs worn by figures such as the Princess of Wales and Meghan Markle, collaborated with Māori tattoo artist Te Rangitu Netana to create uniforms that are both stylish and culturally significant. The designs incorporate traditional Māori patterns, including the kōwhai and purapura whetū, symbolizing national pride and heritage .

A notable addition is the embroidered Huia feather on manager uniforms, historically worn by Māori chiefs, which can be removed and kept upon retirement .

Sustainable and Inclusive Design

Crafted from eco-friendly materials like recycled polyester, organic cotton, and merino wool, they reflect Air New Zealand's commitment to environmental responsibility. The collection includes a range of garments such as dresses, shirts, trench coats, and the 'ie faitaga,' a traditional Pacific Island men's garment, catering to a diverse workforce .

CEO Greg Foran emphasized that the new uniforms are more than just clothing; they are a reflection of the airline's values of innovation, cultural pride, and individuality. The uniforms will undergo onboard trials starting May 2025, with a full rollout expected in 2026, dressing approximately 6,000 staff members worldwide .
